In order to prepare for heart surgery the patient must undergo detailed pre operative assessment. This will help plan surgery and deal with any medical conditions the patient has.
Sometimes it is important to treat some medical conditions before heart surgery to improve results. For example treat teeth infections.
For optimal assessment the following will be needed:
- Full medical history by your cardiologist and surgeon
- Focused physical examination
- Heart catherisation
- Echo of the heart
- Blood test
- Chest X-ray
- Pulmonary (Lung) function test (PFTs)
- Blood cross match for possible transfusion
Optional test
- Neck vessels scan (Carotid Doppler)
- CT scan
- MRI Scan
- Endoscopic echo (Trans Oesphegeal Echo: TOE)
